Vanasiri Rural Development Society

To empower marginalized communities with access, control, and ownership over natural resources for sustainable and dignified living.

Vanasiri Rural Development Society (VRDS), registered in 2004, is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Haveri district, Karnataka. It works to improve livelihoods for rural and urban poor families through sustainable agriculture, resource management, and social empowerment. VRDS supports over 10,000 families across 50–60 villages with programs focused on skill development, girl child education, and natural resource conservation. The organization fosters community-based initiatives like the Labor Bank and Farmers Producer Organizations. VRDS advocates for child rights and works to ensure year-round employment for migrant workers. Through partnerships, VRDS enhances infrastructure and drives social change for economic resilience.

Empowering Girl child education program in Haveri, Karnataka.

Empowering Girl Child Education through Material Distribution Vanasiri Rural Development Society (VRDS), Ranebennur, Haveri, organized a program to empower girl child education by distributing educational materials to 100 needy girls from 15 high schools. The students, studying in 8th, 9th, and 10th grades, received 20 different essential educational materials each. Program Highlights - Aim: To ensure girls' education continues without dropout from schools. - Chief Guest: Dr. Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar, Deputy Commissioner, Haveri, inaugurated and addressed the program, distributing educational materials and appreciating VRDS and donors for their support. - Distinguished Guests: District Education Officer Shri Suresh Huggi, Deputy Director, Women and Child Development Officer Shri Shrinivas Aladatti, BEO Shri MH Patil, and other education experts and resource persons participated. Awareness Creation During the program, awareness was created about: - Prohibition of Child Marriage - Child Labor - POCSO Act Silver Jubilee Celebration VRDS is celebrating its silver jubilee and plans to support 500 students with educational materials over the next two years. Additionally, four best achievers in Karnataka will be recognized for their contributions to various development works. Empowering Laborers and Small Farmers in Haveri, Karnataka

Our project, running from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2025, focuses on uplifting laborers and small & marginal farmers in Haveri, Karnataka. It aims to enhance their living conditions by fostering self-sustained community-based organizations (CBOs) and strengthening their networks. By promoting sustainable farming practices and building financial resilience, we empower these communities to achieve economic stability and social well-being.

20th anniversary Celebration

The 20th anniversary of Vanasiri Rural Development Society (VRDS) was celebrated at Ramakrishna Ashram Ranebennur with Swami Prakaashanda ji Maharaj in attendance. He appreciated VRDS's efforts in addressing various social issues and implementing development models over the past two decades, including those focused on migrant wage workers, child rights, women's empowerment, livelihood, and the protection and conservation of natural resources. Dr. B.S. Kelgar, Shri G.S. Ramachandra from the Agri Graduate Association, and Shri G.N. Simha, President of VRDS, spoke about development dialogues with the community, sharing their views and thoughts. Three NGO achievers, Shri Ganapati Bhat, Shri Roopa Naik, and Shri Sikandar Miranayak, were honored during the program. VRDS office bearers, board members, and the community participated in the celebration. VRDS announced the decision to celebrate its 25th Silver Jubilee by annually awarding the Best Achiever Cash Prize in the fields of social change in environment, soil and water conservation, forest conservation, child rights, women's empowerment, and livelihood.

Inauguration of Micro Watershed Project in Guddad Hosahalli, Ranebennur

On April 10, 2024, we have organized a program in the village where Shri Akshay Shridhar, IAS, CEO of Zilla Panchayat Haveri, inaugurated the Micro Watershed project in Guddad Hosahalli, Ranebennur. This village, where VRDS is actively working, is benefiting from soil and water conservation and afforestation efforts on a farmer-wise basis. An amount of Rs. 27 lakhs has been approved under MNREGA for constructing trenches and storing rainwater to enhance groundwater levels during the rainy season, utilizing a ridge-to-valley approach. Afforestation works have also commenced on the upper hillock. CEO Sir, along with Vanasiri NGO, pledged continuous support for the watershed, aiming to prevent migration by providing employment opportunities to laborers, who earn Rs. 349 in wages. We express our gratitude to MNREGA and Gram Swaraj Abhiyan. VRDS is expanding this initiative to 5 villages to create models for sustainable development.

Empowering Rural Livelihoods and Sustainability in Haveri District

In Haveri district, Karnataka, our dedication lies in enhancing the livelihoods of all landless households. We achieve this by amplifying employment opportunities through initiatives like MGNREGA and farm labor. Concurrently, our efforts focus on reducing agricultural input costs for small-scale farmers. This commitment extends across 17 villages spread across three blocks: Ranebennur, Hirekerur, and Byadgi. Through collaborative efforts, we strive to uplift rural communities and foster sustainable development.

Empowering Workers and Reducing Migration

Our program starts with the goal of reducing migrant workers by 80% in 70 villages across 4 blocks of Haveri district by the end of 2027. We educate workers about MGNREGA and the labor bank to ensure access to employment opportunities and financial resources. A labor union advocates for workers' rights and welfare. Each labor family is provided with 100 man-days of work under MGNREGA, plus 30-40 additional man-days of local work through the labor bank. Furthermore, all eligible labor families are enrolled in social security schemes for added financial security.

Promoting Sustainable Agriculture for Small and Marginal Farmers

40% of small and marginal farmers adopt sustainable practices to boost land productivity and income. These farmers receive training in various agricultural techniques, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for sustainable farming. Additionally, MGNREGA convergence supports land development, further enhancing agricultural output. By adopting these practices, farmers are empowered to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the long-term sustainability of agriculture.

Reducing School Dropout Rates and Improving Education Quality

Our efforts are focused on reducing the school dropout rate and enhancing the quality of education for 500 educationally deprived children. Over the next three years, we aim to provide employment opportunities to improve the living conditions of 1,000 marginalized families.
